    Dr. Fred “Freddy” A. Price

    EWING ? Dr. Fred “Freddy” A. Price, 88, of Ewing, passed away at home on September 29, 2012 with his loving wife of 38 years by his side.Freddy was born in and raised in Trenton, and he moved to Ewing in 1974. Freddy graduated from Trenton Catholic High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1945. He received his B.S. from Villanova University in 1950, his M.A. from Rutgers in 1955, and his Doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1970. Freddy was an English teacher and head basketball coach at Trenton Central High School (THS) from 1953 until 1968. He was twice named “New Jersey Coach of the Year” by the Associated Press. He took a sabbatical in 1968 to pursue his doctorate at the University of Southern Mississippi. He returned to THS for two years in an administrative position. In 1972 Fred left his position at THS to become a professor at Rider College, teaching English Methods and Curriculum Strategies and Director of Professional Laboratory Experiences (Student Teaching). Then he left Rider in 1974 to become Associate Director of Teacher Education and Certification for the NJ State Department of Education. He served as Director from 1976 until 1983. Then he signed on as an Assistant to the Director of the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association for five years. After retiring from this Association, he became an education consultant for the NJ State Department of Corrections, and served as an Assistant Basketball Coach for Rider’s Men’s Basketball Team. Freddy worked a number of summers as a tour director for Thomas Cook & Son. He retired from working in 1994. Freddy, a well-known athlete in the Trenton area,was a professional baseball player in the Phillies farm system and basketball player with the Trenton Tigers in the American League and Schenectady in the New York State League. He worked for seven years as a basketball analyst for New Jersey Public Television during the late 70s and early 80s. Fred was also an avid tennis player until his illness forced him to hang up his racquet in 2010. Son of the late Fred and Nellie Friel Price, Fred is survived by his wife Vivian (Stroman) Price, two sons Martin of New York City, NY, and Daniel of Roebling, NJ, one sister, Claire Spair, Hamilton, NJ, two sisters-in-law, Comissia Chitty, Burlington, NJ, and JoDean Willis Ward, Goodyear, AZ, a special great niece, Torian Jones, and many other special nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. In addition, Fred unofficially added as family members his home care team from Mercer Street Friends?Jackie Rojas, Carol Dodson, Paula Phullen , Susan Cohen, Robin Gross, and Trish Swiss. Private family viewing and cremation have already taken place. A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Dr. Price on Saturday, October 13, 2012, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nottingham Ballroom, 200 Mercer Street, Hamilton, NJ. Arrangements are under the direction of the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 935 Parkway Avenue, Ewing. In keeping with Dr. Price’s charitable ways, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
